MSI USB 3.1 proves 2X faster, but there's more..

What's new about USB 3.1?

MSI is introducing world’s first motherboards with USB 3.1. So what's actually new about USB 3.1? Well, new technology usually brings improvements. How does transferring data faster than your SATA III SSD sound? USB 3.1 is delivering blazing fast USB performance, up to 2 times faster than USB 3.0 with speeds up to 10 Gb/s. Furthermore, like previous generations of USB, USB 3.1 is fully backwards compatible with USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 devices. The new MSI USB 3.1 motherboards feature an ASMedia ASM1352R USB 3.1 controller which is connected to the Z97/X99 PCH through PCI-Express 2.0 x2, offering 2 onboard USB 3.1 ports. Copy files from your external hard disk or USB pen drive faster than ever.

Is it really that fast? Media tests surprise.

Several media worldwide have already been testing USB 3.1 using the new MSI X99A GAMING 9 ACK motherboard. They published some interesting findings. Let's talk speed first.

Tom's Hardware Guide did some performance-testing using 2 SSD's to show USB 3.1 at its fastest.

So performance numbers are already showing up to 733.5 MB/s real-world performance. Another media, PC Perspective, sums up the new performance gained by USB 3.1 nicely in the following  eye-opening quote: "Taking USB 3.0 as an example, Superspeed can handle a raw 5Gbps data rate, but after subtracting out the overhead (packet framing, flow control, etc), you are left with ~450MB/s of real throughput. Superspeed+ upgrades the bit encoding type from 8b/10b (80% efficient) to 128b/132b (97% efficient) *in addition to* the doubling of raw data rate. This means that even after accounting for overhead, Superspeed+’s best case throughput should work out to ~1.1GB/s. That’s not a 2x speed improvement – it is actually 2.44x of USB 3.0 speed. Superspeed+ alright!"

Not only is USB 3.1 2x faster, it also lowers CPU utilization.

 usb3.1_cpu Tom's Hardware Guide also concluded that USB 3.1 uses less CPU power compared to USB 3.0. While USB 3.0 activity used up to 11% of CPU power, USB 3.1 only uses up to 5% of the CPU while at the same time delivering even faster speeds. This shows efficiency has also improved greatly!
So now, you've been briefly updated about the most important need-to-knows of USB 3.1. Can you already imagine copying data 20x times faster compared to USB 2.0? We sure can! Want to know even more about USB 3.1? You can find in-depth MSI USB 3.1 testing by several media using the following links;
