Most of the gamers know that a gaming notebook must come with Core i7 Quad Core CPU at first choice, even not a gaming notebook but a multimedia notebook should choose standard Core i5 CPU to get better performance, and never choose U series if you have any expect on CPU performance. At the 6th generation of the AKA Skylake platform, this is so true even with a Core i5 CPU!
MSI gaming notebooks always comes with best Quad Core i7 with higher performance inside, even the ultra slim design of GS60 Ghost series and GS40 Phantom could get better performance than any of the competitors because of better cooling design.
Let’s take a look on behind table, he latest 6th generation Quad Core i7 comes with 4C/8T Core architecture design, and the 6th generation Core i5 now becomes Quad Core as well, it’s all new 4C/4T architecture. That makes the 6th generation Core i5 become higher performance, which makes the latest i5 performance boost a lot than previous version of Core i5 with only 2C/4T design, also much faster than a U series Core i7/i5 with only 2C/2T architecture and 3MB L3 Cache.
The 3D Mark of CPU Score
When we take a look on the CPU performance of 3D Mark CPU score, the Core i7 6820HK got 7414pts, which is 1.92x faster than a Core i7 6500U at only 3852pts. The Core i7 6700HQ got 7121pts is also 1.84x faster than Core i7 6500U CPU. Even a Core i5 6300HQ is also 1.49x faster than Core i7 6500U. So the CPU which is suitable for gaming must be Core i7 6820HK and Core i7 6700HQ, or at least comes with Core i5 6300HQ to play game smoother.
Cinebench R15 Multi CPU 64bit Score
Then we come to the CPU performance of Cinebench R15 Multi CPU 64bit Score, the Core i7 6820HK got 709pts, which is 2.15x faster than Core i7 6500U at only 329pts. The Core i7 6700HQ is also 1.34x faster than a Core i7 6500U CPU. Even Core i5 6300HQ is also 1.31x faster than Core i7 6500U. So if you want to have much better performance on video transcoding works, you better choose Core i5 6300HQ at least, but for some multi cores program, Core i7 6700HQ still much faster.

For some users who like to test benchmark across different OS even different CPU platform, The Geekbench 3 is one of the benchmark for all PC and mobile devices, the Core i7 6820HK got 13846 score, which is 2.04x faster than Core i7 6500U at only 6785 score. The Core i7 6700HQ is also 1.90x faster than a Core i7 6500U CPU. Even Core i5 6300HQ is also 1.40x faster than Core i7 6500U. If you want a reference on different platform, the mobile phone of SONY Xperia Z3 is 2812 score, Galaxy S5 is 2836 score, it’s kind of fun to see the performance at totally different platforms.
Use Right Quad Core i7, or at least Quad Core i5, not U series!
It’s simple to come out this conclusion here, since the Real Quad Core i7 6820HK and 600HQ shows great performance on most of the usage, even Quad Core i7 6300HQ is much better than Core i7 6500U, so what are you waiting for? Pick a MSI gaming notebook with Quad Core i7/i5 is the best choice, especially it comes with better thermal design of Cooler Boost 3 and best SHIFT feature for performance or silence manually!
