What's Modern Standby?



Modern Standby allows the Notebook system to be like mobile devices (cell phones) that stay connected and stay alive with limited activities (getting the notification, receiving mail and keep the music playing...etc.) even when the screen is locked and dimmed. By putting the system into S0 low power idle (aka. Modern Standby), the system can not only stay connected and can be resumed instantly. Learn more about Modern Standby



Modern Standby Support



Modern Standby requires a hardware support, follow steps below to confirm.



a. Enter "cmd" in the search column of desktop.



b. Right-click on the Command Prompt and select to "Run as Administrator".



c. Enter the command "powercfg /a" and press "Enter" key.



d. If the notebook supports Modern Standby, "Standby (S0 Low Power Idle) Network Connected" will show up in the window.



How To Enter Modern Standby?



For models which supports Modern Standby, the traditional Sleep mode will be replaced in the Windows 10 system.



Select "Windows" > "Power" > "Sleep" to put the system into Modern Standby mode.



*Note: When the system enters Modern Standby, all components will be switched to a lower power state mode depending on the running background program, components that aren't in use will be put into a deeper power-saving state, or be powered off once their tasks are finished.



Why do the fans keep spinning after entering Modern Standby?



Some programs and Windows Update are allowed to be working in the background when the system enters the Modern Standby. At this time, although the system screen is turned off, the keyboard backlight remains on, and as the processors are still working, for protection reasons, the fan will continue running at the lowest speed.



If the user doesn’t wish to hear the fan running after putting the system to sleep, or the battery is faster drained due to the running background updates & programs at Modern Standby, it is recommended to close unused programs and keep the Windows system up to date before entering Modern Standby, or choose to put the system into hibernation or shut down.



Why the system is still running even if I try to put it into sleep?



Modern Standby support requires all hardware components & devices supporting the power saving mode (the RTD3), otherwise, the system will be kept running.



For example, some previous generational Thunderbolt devices might not support the RTD3 power saving mode, therefore, while the system connected to it, the modern standby supported system will have trouble entering Sleep.



Trying to remove the external devices and check again. If no external devices are connected but still encountering the same problem, contact with MSI support team for further assistant.
