[Desktop] What to Do if the Laptop Won't Shut Down

If your laptop is stuck and won’t shut down, please follow these troubleshooting steps:

If the computer could respond, please to open the Task Manager. Press “Ctrl + Shift + Esc” to open the Task Manager, review and end unnecessary or not responding applications, especially some running background applications might prevent your computer from shutting down properly.

Disable Fast Startups

In the search box on the taskbar, type and open” Choose a power plan,” uncheck the "Turn on fast startup" option in the Power Options → System Settings, and save the changes.

Remove External Devices

Please first try to remove the external devices connected to the computer, and confirm whether the problem is solved.

Check System Integrity

1. In the search box on the taskbar, type "CMD," select "Run as administrator," and click "Yes." (Take Windows 11 for example.)

2. Type DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth (ensure there is a space before each /), and press "Enter."

3. Once the message "The operation completed successfully" shows up, type sfc/scannow and press "Enter."

4. Please wait for the sfc scan completes, close the CMD and try to shut down the computer again.
